Today June 21 is the summer solstice in 2026.
The so-called ‘longest day of the year’, the sunlight stretches long — from 5:12 am this morning to 9:19 pm this evening (Pacific Time, Victoria, BC).
Veggie gardeners will of course know this, and are likely out in their gardens right now!
Flowers, edibles and other foliage of the backyard garden seem in an almost in celebratory mood today.
The weather today on south Vancouver Island is bright, warm (a high of 24°C), with a light breeze. Perfect for a midsummer night’s eve.
Do remember to water your garden to avoid the impacts of heat, but also be cognisant of water conservation for the region’s water supply.
Eating vegetables and fruit that you have grown yourself contributes to optimal health for you and your family. It also builds a skill set that can be passed down from one generation to the next.
The opportunity and know-how to grow your own food in an urban environment is worth celebrating at the summer solstice.
