Healthier food in healthier spaces

Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society (UFRIS) is a non-profit society based on south Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.

  • In tough economic times it’s more important than ever to grow even a small amount of food for good nutrition, zero carbon footprint, and economic resilience.
  • Individuals, neighbourhoods, non-profits and food-growing specialists are invited to connect with us. Collaboration is key.
  • By facilitating urban food-growing, we empower individuals and communities to take control of their food sources.
  • By enabling the healthiest possible food for our household and our neighbours, we are supporting a healthy population of people who live, think and feel better.
  • By supporting pregnant and breastfeeding moms with the best possible healthy fresh food, we are part of growing the next healthy generation of children and youth.

Facilitating urban food-growing

Developing & maintaining your own urban growing-spaces for vegetables, herbs and fruit; guidance on plants and planting, in-ground and pots, soil and garden management, irrigation & water conservation, harvesting and storage.

Improvement of regional soils

Good soil allows for better food-growing in pots, yards, community and region. We advocate for soil improvement in all regions of BC and non-use of pesticides or herbicides.

Municipal infrastructure

Help municipalities align bylaw and development permit parameters with urban food-growing capacity.

Nutrition for moms: pregnant & breastfeeding

Facilitating the supply and delivering of best-possible fresh foods for pregnant and lactating women, and their babies.

Emergency preparedness

Advocate for food fresh/frozen food supply in local neighbourhoods for use in emergency response (e.g. earthquake or other major supply chain interruptions).

Community resource

Develop a comprehensive archive of information on healthy food, growing food in urban areas, and preparation of fresh natural foods.
