As of February 4, 2025 there will be a tariff of 25% imposed on all Canadian exports to the US.
Canada sends a lot of food products to the United States; the cost of those products will shoot up for Americans and the market could dry up.
This is an economic crisis for Canada — a recession or even a depression is anticipated by experts.
There is no better time for Canadian farmers to sell more of their products within Canada, to Canadians.
There is also no better time to be growing your own natural food (veggies and fruits), if you aren’t already doing so.
Canadian grocery shoppers are very much dependent on some products that are not presently grown in Canada, e.g. oranges, almonds.
UFRIS will continue our work to encourage municipalities (and the province with their authority over municipalities) to incentivize developers to ensure that food-growing capacity is included in all new development permits throughout BC.
