by Mary P Brooke, Executive Lead, UFRIS
It was a rainy setup on Saturday morning May 10 for our UFRIS meet-and-greet at Porcher Park Community Garden.
But the sun came out and so did Langford food-growing enthusiasts!
Thank you to our volunteer setup crew and everyone who visited.
Volunteers:
Volunteers in the past week to help get the garden ready have been many, including Lee, Victoria, Shirl, Pat, Krista, Wade, Krys, Ashton, Kara, Liz, Karen, Gary, Sébastien, and others. Also joining the volunteer team on May 10 were Nancy and Emily.

Several neighbours around the Porcher Park site were very helpful to the success of the development phase this past week including Karen and Gary, as well as Chris and Michael.

Household & community plots:
There are 34 growing plots: 31 for households of various sizes; two for high-yield crops for community donation; and one outside the gate for community availability (a version of boulevard gardens).

Some garden boxes are taller so that people can stand to do their gardening without bending over (part of our commitment to supporting seniors or others with Accessibility needs).
Plot assignments:
Plot assignments will be announced this coming week. Plots can be shared to make sure everyone gets a spot.

For households UFRIS provides the boxes and the soil, the rest is up to you (bring plants, tools, trellises, etc).
Community plots:
We are seeking skilled growers for managing the three community plots. Contact info@urbanfoodresilience.ca or by tel/text at 250-588-7091.

Major donors and suppliers:
To get the Porcher Park Community Garden up and running we are very grateful for the material donations by RONA (lumber and hardware) and IslandEarth Landscape Services Ltd (soil).

Helpful suppliers also included Home Depot (Langford), Slegg Building Materials, Tarp and Tool, and Princess Auto.
The on-site contractor has been Jay’s Construction Group — Jay and Kelsey together with Les built the 34 garden boxes in record time.
GardenWorks Colwood donated tomato and cucumber starters as well as marigolds as pollinators. More tomato plants were supplied by Sunshine Shell Creations.

Signage support was provided by MapleLine Business Centre.
Donations welcome:
Donations to keep the garden rolling are always welcome. We’re accepting plants and tools as well as garden equipment like trellises.

Financial donations also welcome by etransfer to info@urbanfoodresilience.ca or by cheque to Urban Food Resilience Initiatives Society (UFRIS) by postal mail to 3044 Dornier Rd, Langford, BC V9B 0N2.
